KOINONIA HOUSE® WHEATON (KHW)
The KHW in Wheaton, IL was the very first Koinonia House® and was established in 1991 by Manny & Barbara Mill – the very first Discipleship and Resident Directors (DRDs). KHW serves male ex-prisoners or residents.
Since its inception, the KHW has served over 30 ex-prisoners who came to KHW in search of a support base to help transition them back into society and to help them grow in their Christian walk through a holistic approach. Graduates of the program that KHW offers enjoy a continuing support base of a local church, an ongoing, life-relationship with Christian mentors who help in areas of financial accountability, family relationships and personal Christian growth. Additionally, KHW graduates enjoy renewed family relationships, freedom from a life of crime, a renewed sense of community and many have become successful businessmen.
Five foundational elements are part of the ministry model: Christian family home, provision of two mentors, connection to a local church, biblical discipleship and suitable employment. The program is highly structured and maintains a voluntarily high level of accountability. Individual success is based on the resident’s ability to willfully submit to authority, embrace the Christian family unit and implement basic life skills.
Today, KHW is set up to accommodate up to 4 male residents at one time who will live with a Christian family. The DRDs in place at KHW are currently in transition. Further, the KHW is part of a teaching collaborative effort with Koinonia House® National Ministries and serves as a “lab” for couples in post-prison ministry training.
The Wheaton Koinonia House is an independent 501 (c) (3), not-for-profit organization, governed by a local board of directors.
